The Search for the Perfect Pint

Augustinerbräu Kloster Mülln - Augustinergasse 4,
 5020 Saltzburg..

Picture
Don't forget. Europe is small. Saltzburg is only a two hour train journey away from Munich and this is THE place to go to. The Augustiner doesn't open until early afternoon so it's perfect timing for when the train arrives. Spend some time round the beautiful city and then make your way to the Braustberi. It's situated in a real monastery (the only religious establishment in Austria still brewing) in the old suburb of Mülln, a kilometer or so from the city centre. From the side entrance you walk through towering Gothic arches and long fresco-painted hallways, past a well supplied fast food stand, a deli, butchers shop and bakery. There are a number of beer halls (smoking and non smoking) which seat around 1400 people. The customers are about as varied as you could imaging, ranging from little old grannies in hats (also drinking from litre steins) to complete families, along with all their children, whatever the age. They even let Gibbo in. Although table service is available, most customers choose to select a porcelain krug (pot) from the nearby stacks, wash it in the 'fountain' and queue for a gravity fed fill-up. The beer is dark, rich and strong, as you would expect from a monastic brewery. The Austrian practice of fast, friendly service at a cheap price is in evidence here. It's cheaper than Munich.

We've visited Saltzburg twice now and on both occasions we ate here. The food is very good and of course, so is the beer. There are four regular beers served - Stiegl-Goldbräu 4,9 %, Paracelsus Naturtrüb (unfiltered) 4,9 % , Stiegl-Pils 4,9 % , Stiegl-Weizengold Hefefein 5,4% . it's a showcase outlet of the local regional brewery.  There is a small taproom (the Pils-Kanzlei) which faces onto the street and behind is a large restaurant with a bar behind it.
