The Search for the Perfect Pint

1516 Brewing Company - Schwarzenbergstraße 2, 1010 Vienna

Charlie had heard about this place from some friends and even though it took an age to find, his perseverance was worthwhile. The beer is brewed on the premises and as we had spent the past few days in Bratislava, it was a welcome change to find beers more to our liking. As this was Austria, it was more expensive than Slovakia, but a lot cheaper than Germany. In fact we spent more on this one day in Vienna than we did in five days in Slovakia. No matter. this pub is superb. The food is excellent (if a little 'American') but I said, after Bratislava it made a nice change. The beer though was something else. The first beer was a hoppy blond beer at 3 euro that they called 'lager'. If that was lager, I'd drink it all the time. However, I think they called it that for the English. It is in fact a Helles, similar to a Munich brew. The Dunkles was particularly good and if you wanted another beer you cold try their version of a pint of mixed - Dunkles and helles. The 1516 also has some specials, in fact I believe we tried them all and only just made the last train back to Bratislava. These included Weisse beer, a porter and a couple of pale ales. I have attached a video of the pub below, although I nicked this off YouTube - so thanks to the director.
